Evolution of a Casino from the Marina to the MGM Hotel & Casino
From the Marina to the MGM

The Marina Hotel and Casino opened in 1975 as a 714 room hotel and casino.

In 1989 the Marina Hotel was purchased by the MGM along with the neighboring Tropicana Country Club. During this time it was known as the MGM-Marina Hotel.

In late 1990 the Marina Hotel was closed for the building of the new MGM Grand Hotel. However, in a rare move for Las Vegas, the Marina Hotel tower was not imploded. The then President of MGM, Kirk Kerkorian, respected the Marina as a stable and solidly built hotel tower, so instead of destroying the tower the decision was made to build around the existing structure.

The rooms were gutted and replaced with new fixtures and a new air conditioning system was installed and the exterior of the hotel tower was sheathed in the emerald green skin of the rest of the new casino.

This construction took three years and on December of 1993 the new MGM Grand Hotel opened and within it the remains of what was the Marina Hotel rose like an emerald green phoenix to live again as part of one of the best-known properties on the Las Vegas Strip.
