This week, we wanted to continue our Las Vegas History Series by discussing the Westward Ho Hotel and Casino.
Located on the Las Vegas Strip between Circus Circus and Stardust, the resort opened in 1963. The 15 acres the property was on it was rectangular shaped from Las Vegas Boulevard to South Industrial Road.
The hotel was run and operated by the Petersen family. In the history of Las Vegas, it was one of a few resorts to be owned and operated by a local family. For a time, it billed itself as the world’s largest motel. Casino gaming did not come to the resort until 1971. On the gaming front, the casino had craps, blackjack, roulette and Let it Ride. A fan of locals and true action seekers, Westward Ho was known for having low table minimums. Some of the games had $1 minimum bets.
In 1998, the family sold the property off to American Pastime West LLC after the passing of Dean Petersen. Though it never occurred, there were tentative plans to possibly build a golf course that would be connected to the Westward Ho.
A small locals casino by the name of The Ho was opened in 2004 on South Industrial Road. The casino had five table games and the smallest sportsbook in Las Vegas history with four television sets. Unfortunately, it only lasted one year.
In 2005, the resort closed after it was sold for 145.5 million dollars to Centrex Corporation. November 17, 2005 was the final day the casino was opened.
In the history of Las Vegas, it was the last traditional motel style property on the Strip.
